ALL-TIME HIGH FOR MOBILE, IOT DEVICE INFECTIONS
According to a Threat Intelligence Report by Nokia, there was a steady increase in mobile device infections throughout 2016, with malware striking 1.35% of all mobile devices in October 2016. The report also reveals a surge of nearly 400% in smartphone malware attacks in 2016.
Smartphones were the most targeted devices in the second half of the year, accounting for 85% of all mobile device infections. The report exposes major vulnerabilities in the rapidly expanding universe of IOT devices, underscoring the need for the industry to re-evaluate its IOT deployment strategies to ensure these devices are securely configured, managed and monitored.
CAPE TOWN LAUNCHES #YOUTHSTART ENTREPRENEURSHIP CHALLENGE
The City of Cape Town’s Social Services Directorate has launched the #YouthStart Challenge, a competition aimed at assisting people between the ages of 18 and 35 in developing their existing businesses or start-up ideas.
The competition is an accelerator programme for start-up entrepreneurs in support of youth capacity development and job creation where both the entrepreneur and their ideas are supported through a robust training and mentorship programme. The top 100 entrants will be offered 10 weeks of after-hours mentoring and training to help them assess whether there is a gap in the market for their products or services.
From these 20 finalists will be selected for the play-offs. This group will be offered further mentoring, with 10 entrepreneurs to be selected to participate in a ‘demo day’. In June, the top three will be announced at a gala event. Various prizes as well as business support will be on offer, including access to a network of partners that will provide the winners with business support and mentoring.
